Abstract
When highly charged ions capture electrons from atomic, molecular or solid targets into excited states, the observation of their decay allows to determine various properties of the target, e.g. the initial binding energy of the electrons or their original spin polarization. Examples, using photon and electron spectroscopy will be discussed, and a new method for measuring surface magnetism will be presented.
