Technology and Operations Management

Programma

  • 1 jaar

The core courses within the programme are operations management and control, operations modelling and simulation, behavioural operations management, asset management, and you need to choose either Data-driven Business Innovation or Facility Design and Planning.

Besides, the course on research methods provides knowledge and skills in specific research methods used in the field of technology and operations management, such as design methods and analytical quantitative methods. Next to these core courses, you will create your own profile with two elective courses. All courses in the master programme reflect a mix of lectures, practical cases, computer practicals, tutorials, guest lectures, company visits, and experiments with real-life data.

In your master's thesis project, you produce an academic piece of work and explore the field of technology and operations management in depth. The content of the programme is continuously being evaluated and improved in consultation with students and lecturers and with the business community, for instance through the Advisory Council (board members of Philips Drachten, Groningen Seaports, DHL Supply Chain Benelux, and Districon).

Waarom in Groningen?

The entire life cycle of products and services and the link with practice is the focus of the programme: you learn to plan and control operations during this life cycle and to introduce technological innovations. You learn to approach technology-related questions from a managerial perspective. Studying means working independently and planning your studies yourself. But successful studying depends on many different factors, so it is understandable that you may need to consult an impartial expert to discuss your study progress and personal circumstances that influence your studies. The faculty's study advisors are available to help you. Obviously, everything discussed with the study advisor remains confidential.

Understand the language of the work floor

Graduates of the programme understand the language of the work floor and during your studies you learn how to make the theoretical issues concrete. You're trained to search for solutions to problems and to improve processes.

During the Master's phase you're thrown into the deep end almost immediately, and you're expected to try to resolve business issues together with your fellow students. After I graduate I'd really like to work in the business world. Graduates understand the language of the work floor and during your studies you learn how to make the theoretical issues concrete. You're trained to search for solutions to problems and to improve processes. I'd really like to use this knowledge within a production company or in consultancy. During my degree I did miss attention to the social side of business life. I gained that experience by being a member of the EBF committees for the Bèta Business Days, for European Study Research and for the day organisation of the Business Congress. I've also travelled a lot and I'm a member of a student society. I think that it's very important for students to develop themselves as individuals alongside their studies.

I particularly liked the international orientation and the support provided by the University.

"After two years of work experience, I decided to continue my studies at the University of Groningen by doing the MSc in TOM, following the advice of a friend who had graduated from the programme. I have always been interested in overseeing, designing and controlling the production process and redesigning business operations. This Master's was therefore an opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge in this area of management and to achieve my career goals. I particularly liked the international orientation and the support provided by the University. Indeed, despite the difficulties of restarting my studies, I found the lecturers and other staff very attentive to the needs of students and always available to give their support. I would advise prospective Master's students to stick with it, not be discouraged by the workload and never forget they are not alone. They can always find helpful support from other students or the lecturer."
