Small Business and Entrepreneurship

Linking education to research and career preparation

Our education is strongly rooted in business practice and society. Also right from the start of your degree programme attention is paid to academic research and preprofessional development. Since an analytical and critical mind and problem-solving capabilities are important qualities in any career our students aspire.

In collaboration with external partners we conduct research projects on e.g banking, local government, customer insights, leadership, energy, healthy ageing and lean operations.

'Thinking about starting my own business'

The nice thing about the programme is that it has a very practical orientation. There is a strong focus on concrete aspects such as legislation, entry barriers and issues of succession, for example in family businesses.

" I heard about the Master's degree in SB&E at a RUG information meeting and I was immediately enthusiastic, partly because I have been interested in entrepreneurship for a long time and I am thinking about starting my own business. The nice thing about the Master's degree programme in SB&E is that it has a very practical orientation. There is a strong focus on concrete aspects such as legislation, entry barriers and issues of succession, for example in family businesses, and students are assessed very critically on the characteristics that an entrepreneur should have, according to the literature, such as determination, being prepared to take risks and having pluck. I am currently doing an internship at AM Energy, the 'sustainable development department' of the property developer AM, where I am investigating the possibilities for exploiting sustainable energy in the Netherlands. I am very interested in the world of real estate. It's a market with relatively few big players and a good few smaller ones, there's lots of money involved and the output is visible. I think I will end up in this market after I graduate. Many students of Economics and Business want to work for multinationals, but I am more interested in SMEs. After I graduate I will first travel around Australia and New Zealand for about a year and then find a job. I would advise new Master's students not to underestimate the first six months. It's a busy time. There are no shortcuts and it's hard work, but it's definitely worth it!"
