Research Master in Economics and Business

Linking education to research and career preparation

The study programme has a strong focus on scientific and academic skills. Before students can contribute to a field of study, they will need to know a great deal about that field and have sufficient knowledge about research methods and techniques. Students will therefore be provided with in-depth knowledge about a certain field of economics and business on the one hand, and will be trained in a wide range of research methods on the other.

The specialized courses offered throughout the Research Master reflect the state-of-the-art research performed by experienced scholars in their respective fields. Moreover, Research Master students are individually supervised in their area of interest by renowned researchers.

I enjoy the freedom you have as a researcher

Once I decided to leave Turkey there were a number of European countries where I could have studied. I eventually came to the Netherlands because a lot of programmes here are taught in English.

I was keen to take the International Economics & Business Research Master because of its double focus, and because I enjoy the freedom you have as a researcher. When I'm doing research I'm working for myself and my project, and that makes me happy. I have to say that the Research Master is very demanding. It's not something for someone who regards studying and doing research as a duty. That's not the case with me, I enjoy it.

I wanted to specialise and challenge myself intellectually

After the bachelor, I wanted to specialise and challenge myself intellectually and the Research Master in Economics and Business was just what I was looking for. So far, my experiences are very good, the courses are interesting, I am participating in a research project which is fascinating and the courses are clearly connected.

I chose this Research Master for two reasons. Firstly, the University of Groningen is high-ranked and the researchers of the marketing departement are among the best in their field. Secondly, I like to live in Groningen: my partner, friends and family all live in this city. Also, I enjoyed my bachelor studies here. After a broad bachelor, I wanted to specialise myself and challenge myself intellectually and the RM was just what I was looking for. So far, my experiences are very good, the courses are interesting, I am participating in a research project which is fascinating and the courses are clearly connected to each other. I particularly enjoy the guest lecturers, they offer a different perspective and they are well known in their field of expertise. Currently, my plan is to apply for PhD position after finishing the Research Master. During this year I have become very enthusiastic about doing research because it combines two important interests of mine: mathematics and creativity. Quantification and modelling make subjects measurable and comparable. And designing your own model gives me a lot of satisfaction.

"As a researcher each working day is different, as it depends on the project you are working on."

"The work I did as a student assistant combined with good thesis results allowed me to start as a researcher at the University of Groningen immediately after completing the MSc in Finance and the Research Master's. Although my current focus is in the area of microfinance and development economics, I am also interested in Asset Pricing, Investment Banking and Equity Research.

As a researcher each working day is different, as it depends on the project you are working on. A typical working day for me starts by checking my e-mails and then planning the rest of my day. Some days I just have to do a lot of writing/programming, while other days I teach. The knowledge and skills required for this job overlap to a great extent with my studies – especially the econometric skills, which I still use on a daily basis. Nevertheless, what was missing was a general course unit which focused on how to write an academic article or a course unit teaching advanced tricks for programs such as R and Stata. The biggest difference between my studies and my current job is the level of responsibility. I would therefore recommend you plan ahead as this makes it much easier to get through."
