Ecology and Evolution

Programma-opties

  • Top programme Evolutionary Biology (specialisatie)

The Top Programme Evolutionary Biology is part of the Master's programme in Ecology and Evolution. It provides an optimal preparation for excelling students pursuing a career in academic research.

As a student of the Top Programme you will be involved with research within the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES; http://www.rug.nl/research/gelifes/) that harbours research groups of international excellence. The hallmark of the programme is to explore the interface between ecology and evolution. In line with the mission of GELIFES, the programme also strives to integrate mechanistic 'proximate' approaches (how does a biological system function?) with evolutionary 'ultimate' approaches (why does the system function the way it does?).

Research projects can be found in a broad variety of areas, ranging from community ecology to evolutionary medicine, and from behavioural ecology to evolutionary genetics. Research can be conducted in the field or in the lab and theoretically as well as experimentally.

Since the Top Programme is highly demanding and challenging, only the top 10-15% of a cohort can be admitted. During these projects, students are fully embedded in a research group where they work on their own research questions. The label 'Top Master' programme to a limited number of selective, international programmes that are strongly research oriented and specifically designed to provide an optimal preparation for a subsequent PhD project and eventually a career in academic research.

We also offer the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME; www.evobio.eu), which is a joint initiative of the universities of Groningen, Montpellier (France), Munich (Germany), Uppsala (Sweden) and Harvard (USA). MEME is based on the same philosophy as the Top programme, but students have extra mobility requirements, since they are supposed to obtain a double degree from two different universities.

  • Science, Business & Policy (profiel)

Interested in the business side of science? You can combine this Master's programme with the Science Business & Policy profile. The SBP profile includes a six-month internship as a scientific advisor.

  • Research profile (profiel)

The regular programme consists of a 2-year programme, which includes various elective courses (mostly 5 ECTS courses) and two individually supervised research projects.

Students can work on their own research question while being fully embedded in a research group.

  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Programme Evolutionary Biology (MEME) (specialisatie)

Striving for a study in the international arena? This can be achieved in all tracks of the Master's programme Ecology and Evolution, since many of its students conduct research projects abroad.

The MEME programme is special in that it is organized by four European universities (Groningen, Montpellier, Munich, Uppsala) and Harvard University. There are strict mobility requirements and in the end the graduates receive MSc degrees from two different universities. Like the Top Programme, MEME is selective and strongly research oriented. The students who are most highly ranked during the admissions procedure receive a scholarship. For details, you may consult the MEME website.

My Ecology and Evolution programme gives me a lot of freedom, which means I can schedule my time the way I like

Life at the university is totally different from my home country China . My Ecology and Evolution programme gives me a lot of freedom, which means I can schedule my time the way I like. We work in projects a lot, so I get the chance to practice my applied skills. You learn to solve problems by yourself and work independently. But at the same time my classmates, the professors and the university staff are always there when I'm in need for help or advice!

I love the fact that the study programme allows me to do an internship as a project. An internship gives me the chance to familiarize with our scientific work in real companies and institutes. This experience is really valuable for my future career. A piece of advice to future students would be to inform about possible projects before you arrive here. It gives you an advantage when you've already found a suitable project and supervisor.

I would recommend Ecology and Evolution, and the city of Groningen as a whole, to any prospective student who wants to enjoy a quiet, cosy and academic studying experience abroad! The University has a great 400 year history , the residents are lovely and friendly, and all speak English at a high level. Other than that, I really enjoy riding my little cute bike to anywhere I want in this city! it's convenient and safe.
