History

In 2014 the University of Groningen will celebrate its 400th anniversary. It is the second oldest university in the Netherlands, after Leiden. Since its inception in 1614, the University of Groningen has built up a rich academic tradition, something we are justly proud of. Throughout its 395 years the University has produced many extremely talented graduates, including a Nobel prizewinner, the first female student and the first female lecturer in the Netherlands, the first Dutch astronaut and the first president of the European Central Bank.
