Freemovers & contract students

Faculty of Arts

At the Faculty of Arts there is the possibility to enroll for one or two semesters. You can take undergraduate courses offered by the various departments of our Faculty and receive grades/credits for them. The maximum stay is one academic year and you can enroll at the start of the semester. This programme does not lead to a Bachelor degree.

A distinction is made between the following programmes:

Programme:
Freemover (only EU-students)

Your university does not have a mobility agreement with the Faculty of Arts of the university of Groningen. You are enrolled as a fulltime student.

Contract Student (EU and non-EU students) You are not a (fulltime) student but you are interested in taking some courses at the Faculty of Arts of the university of Groningen.

Please notice that we can only accept a few freemovers or contract students each year. Exchange students are given priority, but freemover and contract student applications will be considered seriously.

Freemovers and Contract students can only get limited help from the International Offiice for organising their stay in Groningen. They need to take care of their own living expenses. On the website of the International Office lots of useful information can be found about organising a stay in Groningen.

Visa

If you do not have an EU/EEU nationality you need a visa to study in the Netherlands. The International Office will apply for the visa on your behalf. As a proof of sufficient financial means (obligatory for the visa application) freemover and contract students need to deposit an amount of €810 for every month of your intended stay in the Netherlands on the faculty's bank account (1 semester: +/- 4800 euros, 2 semesters: +/- 8900 euros). This amount will be refunded upon arrival. You will receive more detailed information on the visa procedures after sending in your application documents.

Additional visa costs

The handling fee for visa/residence permit charged by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service is € 300 for the MVV and € 300 for the residence permit for non-EU students for the academic year 2012/2013. For students from country group 2, the handling fee for the residence permit is € 600. This is an additional fee on top of the 4800/8900 as proof of sufficient financial means, and will not be refunded.

We would like to stress that the handling fee will not be refunded by the IND in case we will need to withdraw your visa application at a later stage for any kind of reason (e.g. personal reasons which prevent you from doing your study abroad, you do not manage to fulfill our entry requirements, etc).
