Research organisation

Research organisation of the Faculty of Arts is a reflection of the official policy of the Dutch Government. Most important players in the field are research institutes and research schools. A new development is the creation of a Graduate School for the Humanities. In some areas contract research and research with a social concern are embedded in special centres.

Research Institutes

Research takes place in the three faculty research institutes.

Most researchers participate in one of the faculty research institutes.

Research schools

Many doctoral students in the Netherlands are trained at so-called “research schools” (“onderzoekscholen”). These are based upon the Anglo-Saxon graduate school, but have acquired their own specific character in this country. The research schools have their own research programmes and are responsible for the PhD trainings of students of the affiliated faculties. Schools are headed by a director and a scientific advisory board. They fall under the auspice of one of the faculties. The Faculty of Arts holds the secretary of two research schools: the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies (NRSMS) and the Groningen Research School for the Study of the Humanities (GRSSH).
Researchers and PhD students of the faculty institutes are members of a research school in their area. Apart from the Groningen Research School for the Study of the Humanities (GRSSH) and the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies, researchers at the Faculty of Arts participate in the School of Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience (BCN), the Dutch National Graduate School in Classical Studies (OIKOS), the Netherlands research institute and research school for economic and social history (N.W. Posthumus Institute), the Netherlands School of Archaeological Research (Archon ) and the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics(LOT).

Graduate school for the Humanities

The Graduate School for the Humanities of the Faculty of Arts offers the organizational infrastructure within which graduate students participate in advanced training and supervised research.

Centres of expertise

Contract research of the faculty is embedded in  centres of expertise:

  • Centre for Language, Education and Communication (ETOC)
  • Centre for Information and Communication Research (CICO)
  • Dutch Agricultural Historical Institute (NAHI)

Centres for research and education

In some fields there are centres in which university teachers and researchers operate together with people and organisations in society.

Other interesting research is carried out by centres and institutes indirectly connected to the Faculty of Arts. See for example  the Centre for European Security Studies (CESS).
