Page content: Research organisation of the Faculty of Arts is a reflection of the official policy of the Dutch Government. Most important players in the field are research institutes and research schools. A new development is the creation of a Graduate School for the Humanities. In some areas contract research and research with a social concern are embedded in special centres. Research InstitutesResearch takes place in the three faculty research institutes.
Most researchers participate in one of the faculty research institutes. Research schoolsMany doctoral students in the Netherlands are trained at so-called “research schools” (“onderzoekscholen”). These are based upon the Anglo-Saxon graduate school, but have acquired their own specific character in this country. The research schools have their own research programmes and are responsible for the PhD trainings of students of the affiliated faculties. Schools are headed by a director and a scientific advisory board. They fall under the auspice of one of the faculties. The Faculty of Arts holds the secretary of two research schools: the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies (NRSMS) and the Groningen Research School for the Study of the Humanities (GRSSH). Graduate school for the HumanitiesThe Graduate School for the Humanities of the Faculty of Arts offers the organizational infrastructure within which graduate students participate in advanced training and supervised research. Centres of expertiseContract research of the faculty is embedded in centres of expertise:
Centres for research and educationIn some fields there are centres in which university teachers and researchers operate together with people and organisations in society.
Other interesting research is carried out by centres and institutes indirectly connected to the Faculty of Arts. See for example the Centre for European Security Studies (CESS).
