'L'uso del Ballare'

New literary approaches to European dance traditions, 1500 - 1700

In the field of the study of dance in the early modern period, dance practice is often considered from a historical, aesthetic or choreographic perspective. The Department of Romance Languages and Cultures of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) proposes a conference on the progressive textualization of the European dance from 1500 to 1700, a period of transition characterized by the organization of encyclopedic knowledge, as well as by an increasing number of published dance treatises. Which approaches turn out to be innovative for comprehending dance in its historical context? Was the treatise writing an instrument of ‘comfort’, in order to make the dance visible in culture? Was it a question of literary opportunity, did it indicate an insertion of preexisting rhetorical practices? And was the flowering of dance treatises a sign of dynamics or a sign of restraint?

Various themes are to be explored during the seminar dedicated to the body in movement. A first question is the relation between norm and anti-norm. Did the staging of a non-prescribed knowledge denote the beginning of artistic freedom? Secondly, it is important to investigate the relation between theory and practice: did the theory provide a synthesis of dance practices, because the practice was becoming more and more elaborate and popular? Or was the practice rather a starting point for theoretical reflection? Did this reflection mark progression or regression? Furthermore, the question arises if the dance treatise could be considered as a rhetorical cover. What was the impact of rhetoric on the (textual) construction of dance practices?

During this conference we would like to establish a synthesis by formulating tentative answers to these and other questions, by means of contributions by several international experts.
