Research

Center for Japanese Studies

Research

The Center's research on the interrelations between technology and culture will be both innovative and unique in the Netherlands and abroad.

Technology

In the technology area there are three focus points: Japanese automotive and information  technology and Japanese consumer electronics. All those areas are currently developing on a very fast and highly interesting track. What are the current Japanese innovations, trends and fashions? Are there significant differences from western producers of cars or electronics and from current western thinking about the future of these significant industries?

Culture

In the cultural area research will concentrate on Japanese corporate and cultural identity. The research will concentrate on the differences between the self-image and the outside-image of the Japanese. In other words: how do the Japanese see their own achievements and how are those achievements seen in the West? Another research question concerns the paradoxal relationship between the highly sophisticated Japanese technology and the traditional Japanese culture dating back more than ten centuries.

A number of PhD students, researchers and professors will work within the two research areas mentioned above.
