The degree programme
If you are interested in language and want to learn more about linguistics, then the Research MA in Linguistics may be just what you are looking for. The Research MA in Linguistics is a two-year Master’s degree programme focusing on research in the field of linguistics. The Research MA in Linguistics in Groningen is characterized by a unique combination of theoretical linguistics, neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics.
The teaching in the Research MA in Linguistics dovetails with the linguistics research at the University of Groningen, conducted within the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG).
Linguistic research in Groningen concentrates on the structure, the processing and acquisition and the use of linguistic knowledge, particularly in the fields of syntax, semantics and discourse.
Use is made of a multitude of linguistic methodologies – formal-theoretical analysis, corpus analysis, psycholinguistic experiments, behaviour studies, computational techniques.
During your degree you will be given intensive training in the theories and methods applied.
Right from the start of the programme you will be involved in current research activities within the CLCG, for example lectures by researchers, regular discussion meetings and lab meetings.
Graduates can proceed on to a PhD position at the University of Groningen or another university in the Netherlands or abroad.
Many graduates have already found PhD positions.
In addition, they can also apply for positions in information and communication technology, as translators or text writers, in organizations concerned with the development of teaching material or curricula in the field of language and at research departments in business or the non-profit sector.
