The research master Art History and Archaeology offers a two-year training programme in the theory and methodology of material culture and landscape studies from multiple perspectives. Also, it aims at the development of awareness of the responsibilities that face academics today with regard to the scientific study, conservation, restauration and presentation of cultural heritage. Students can choose for a specialization track in archaeology, art, architecture or landscape, while following a partly shared programme in the first year.
Perspectives on material culture and the representation of landscapes
Two in-depth seminars, taken by all students in this research master, focus at the historical background of the interaction between archaeology and art, in their mutual effort to understand cultural dynamics, as well as the parallel development of perspectives on the nature and representation of cultural landscapes. In both fields, art and archaeology have frequently crossed paths and exchanged their findings. Indeed, it is important to realise that the interaction between art and archaeology has influenced our modern-day views on the relationship between humankind and the environment to a non-negligeable extent.
