The programme and its objectives

Classical Medieval and Renaissance Studies – short CMRS – is a unique multidisciplinary research MA. You will receive advanced research  training in your main subject: ancient, medieval or early modern history, or Latin, Greek, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch or German literature – but you will also enjoy the benefits of an active interdisciplinary research environment. You will explore the similarities and differences between these periods and languages, and gain fundamental insights into the cultural changes that preceded the modern period. Students each follow their own individual programme of courses tailored to their interests and requirements. These include specialist tutorials by expert academic staff on techniques and skills, periods of study abroad, but also joint courses on theory and method. During the last six months of the programme students write a substantial MA dissertation to demonstrate both technical proficiency and conceptual originality and breadth of vision.  It is this approach of comparative cultural and historical analysis taught by excellent scholars as well as the intensive contacts with fellow students from other disciplines, that makes CMRS such a challenging and exciting program.

Start date

The programme starts twice a year, in September and February. Admission to the Research MA in CMRS will be made on the basis of careful selection (see Selection and Admission procedure).
