The programme was developed within a European network of the universities of Eastern Finland (Joensuu), Potsdam (Germany) and Groningen. A selection committee decides on admission. Students who are interested in the EMCL may apply before the 15th of November each year. The programme runs at all participating universities, with exchanges between these participants. It starts with an introductory programme for all students in Potsdam.

Students will receive a joint degree from the participating universities. Until joint degrees are recognized in the Netherlands, studens that follow part of their programme in Groningen will receive a double degree (MA Research Master Linguistics) of the University of Groningen.
