About our teaching

Faculty of Arts

Fields of interest and expertise

Each Faculty of Arts at the Dutch universities has a special field of interest and expertise for its education and research. In Groningen the main focus is on the Western world, with special attention for Europe and the North Americas.
From this point of view relations of Europe with the 'non European world' are studied as well, with emphasis on Europe's relations with Africa, Indonesia and Japan.

We offer Bachelor and Master programmes in modern and classical languages and cultures from Europe and the Middle East, history, art history and archaeology. There are also programmes in the fields of communication, journalism, humanities computing, linguistics and international relations.  We also participate in European networks with our Erasmus Mundus Master Programmes Euroculture, Humanitarian Action, Clinical Linguistics, and Language and Communication Technologies.

Education and research are closely linked at our Faculty, because we believe that in academic programmes education and research cannot operate without each other and both benefit from this close co-operation.

Student-oriented programmes

The Faculty of Arts has developed student-oriented programmes, which will prepare our students for the future demands made on them after the completion of their studies. Our programmes are based on learning outcomes and competences. Special attention is given to acquire excellent presentation and writing skills.

International students

If you are an international (prospective) student and interested in studying at our Faculty, we advise you to visit our website for international students. (Please note that the main language of instruction for our Bachelor programmes is Dutch. We do have several course modules in English for our international exchange students). German students who are interested in studying at our university are advised to visit the German information site.

Our Faculty offers 12 international master programmes in English. There is also a (unique) master programme 'Dutch Culture' for international students with a bachelor degree in 'Dutch Language and culture'. Its language of instruction is therefore Dutch.

Our course catologue can inform you about the contents of all our courses (please check the language of instruction as this may vary!).
