An international programme!
Students of International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) study political issues at an international level. The degree programme focuses on all aspects of international relations, in particular the function and role of international organizations.
During the degree programme you will be approaching issues in the field of international relations from three angles: political,
economic and legal. In addition, you will receive thorough training in a foreign language. During the degree programme you will acquire a broad yet specialized understanding of international relations.
The bachelor’s programme in International Relations and International Organization is taught in English. Having a thorough command of English is essential!
However, Dutch students will be able to choose a so called ‘bilingual track’ in which all plenary elements – such as lectures, literature, syllabi, and exam questions – are in English and all individual elements – such as tutorials, assignments, theses, and answers to exam questions – are either in English or in Dutch. More information about the bilingual track.
IRIO in Groningen
IRIO in Groningen is unique in the Netherlands: it’s the only bachelor programme where international relations are not a specialization but core business. IRIO focuses on all aspects of international relations: historical, political, economic and legal perspectives are combined. The main emphasis is the functions of international organizations, and the process leading to their creation. You are trained to see beyond one specialization and to combine insights from various fields of study. A lot of attention is paid to research skills, language training, methodologies, historical context and theory.
The programme is offered jointly by the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics.
Please note: the Bachelor's degree programme in International Relations and International Organization is a quota study (numerus fixus).
