Information for KVI PhD students

FANTOM/KVI is participating in the Groningen Graduate School of Science (GGSS) and for training issuses it follows the GGSS rules and regulations as much as possible. For most practical purposes we refer to the:

> GGSS information for current PhD students

However:

  • FANTOM/KVI is responsible for its own personnel (and scholarship) affairs, including hiring, employments, extensions of contracts, progress assessment, arrangements in case of illness, etc. (Originals) of employment documents and progress reports will be filed at KVI. For all personnel affairs contact the KVI Personnel Department, which will be the intermediate to the GGSS, if necessary. Bursalen can contact PhD coordinator Marjan Koopmans.
  • FANTOM/KVI is responsible for its own financial affairs and does not participate in the Individual Training Budget of the GGSS. Training costs for PhD students will be payed by the group budget or, in special cases, from the general KVI training budget. KVI also has its own arrangement for the reimbursement of thesis printing costs and it has its own bonus in case of timely arrangement of a thesis manuscript.
  • FANTOM/KVI has its own version of the Training and Support Plan, to be completed at the start of the PhD project.

  • Until further notice, FANTOM uses the FOM progress report forms (English version and Dutch version) for all KVI PhD students.

FANTOM follows the rules for the educational programme of the GGSS, with the addition of the following mandatory activities:

  • At least four general FANTOM study weeks (1.5 ECTS per week), including at least one student presentation,
  • the FANTOM Presentation Training (1.5 ECTS),
  • training Publishing in English (3 ECTS).

FOM PhD students will do the introductory FOM course Taking charge of your PhD project instead of the RUG course Mastering you PhD.

Note: PhD students who started before 1 January 2010 are in the old FANTOM regime and have to follow educational activities to an amount of at least 36 ECTS (in stead of the 30-36 ECTS of the GGGSS). However, they do not have to write an introductory essay and the training Publishing in English is not mandatory for them.
