Page content: Nano-research is one of the spearheads of the University of Groningen. Especially in 1999 the research group of Ben Feringa achieved world fame by building the first light-driven molecular motor. It was unique that the molecule turned constantly to the same side: that is important in medicines, in which one side can be lifesaving and the other side killing. In 2005 Feringa published an important continuation of this research in Nature. The same molecular motor is attached to the surface of a little golden ball. Kees van Hummelen and his research group are engaged in the development of plastic solar panels. His research produced a lot of knowledge and tens of scientists fanned out to worldwide companies engaged in solar energy. Chemicus Ben Feringa is er met zijn team in geslaagd een nano-systeem te assembleren en met behulp van licht te disassembleren. Dit komt voornamelijk doordat wetenschappers de transistors (een soort elektronische schakelaartjes) steeds kleiner weten te maken.
