The Dr. Nassau College is a state school for secondary education in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The school offers education at every level and has two divisions in Assen (Penta and Quintus) and divisions in Beilen, Gieten and Norg. Education is offered to a total of about 3,000 pupils. Every division has something extra to offer, which differs per school. Students can choose for the school which is closest to their personal interests and ambitions. The school is named after Dr. Hendrik Jan Nassau. He was a Dutch language expert at the Latin School in Assen in the beginning of the 19th century. Later in his career he became the headmaster of the gymnasium of Assen. His main purpose was to educate students into independent thinking and acting persons. Jan Hendrik Nassau was a progressive and enthusiastic person. The Dr. Nassau College focuses on the transfer of knowledge and personal development of its students. In addition to this we consider the teaching of skills, attitudes and values just as important. We encourage independence and the formation of judgement both in our education and in our acting. Teacher educationThe Dr. Nassau College is a training school for teachers, which means that our school becomes more and more responsible for the education and coaching of our own teachers. The professionalization of teachers is one of the school's most important spearheads. We participate in the international working group in order to think along with our foreign colleagues on the design of a European Master of Education. Given our experience with everyday school practice, we expect to be able to contribute to the JoMITE project. Moreover, we want to offer international students the opportunity to do a work placement at our school. This way we can learn from our colleagues abroad as well.
