Project approach

In its key resolution “Improving the Quality of Teacher Education”, the European Parliament encourages the promotion of continuous and coherent professional development of teachers throughout their careers. The document urges that particular attention should be paid to the initial induction of new teachers. The aim of the INNOTE project is to enrich each other, to develop and pilot a comprehensive induction and mentoring program, with regard to research proven data and the countries´ own flavors.

Good practices

Induction of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) is treated very differently between countries, but also between schools within countries. Research shows no specific induction tool to be most effective, but a collection of induction activities seems to be more effective than doing nothing. It is important for schools and teacher education institutions to learn from each other which kind of induction activities can be done and how that can be done. Therefore we will collect and describe good practices for induction so schools and teacher education institutions will have the possibility to select the practices that fit best to their situation.

NQTS learning needs

In this work package the NQT's learning needs will be analyzed. To do so, we will develop a structurized interview format. In each participating country, ten NQTs will be interviewed.

Seminars

INNOTE will organize three international seminars about Induction, each with a different topic. The seminars are open for non-partners. Tentative dates are:

Seminar 1: What is known about induction and how can it be done.

Seminar 2: Good practices in induction.

Seminar 3: Induction as part of school/university strategy.

Workshops

In each of the participating countries there will be 3 workshops organized around induction. These workshops will have a similar appearance in all countries. The workshops are related to the

Workshop 1: How to organize induction?

Workshop 2: Good practices

Workshop 3: Induction as part of school/university strategy and professional development strategy

Courses

Within INNOTE we will design courses for newly qualified teachers and their school mentors. Focus of these courses is on the intercultural dimension of teaching. The courses are also open for none-partners of the project.

Annual reports / publications

Each project year, there will be an annual report with different a focus on induction.

The first report will focus on the current induction situation in the different countries.

The second report will focus on good practices of induction and an update of the literature analysis.

The third report will focus on induction strategies and policies for schools and universities. This will derived from a second national document analysis and by interviewing stakeholders in each country.

Evaluation

To assure the quality and evaluation of the project, we make a distinction between the process of the project and the quality of the products. The first part will be measured via a online questionnaire. On base of the results of this questionnaire, an external evaluator will be asked to draw conclusions and give recommendations for further improvement by the project management. This external evaluator will also interview participants in the project about the process and use this as another source for his evaluation report.

A second part is focused on the quality of the products. The main products within this project are seminars, courses and workshops. The participants within these activities will be questioned via a online questionnaire about their experiences and feelings of the products. The external evaluator will use the results of this questionnaires as a source for his report. He might also interview participants to get more information. Furthermore he might use his own knowledge and experience, as we will ask a well known expert in teacher
