Printing

To be able to print you need to install either a local or network printer. The procedure for installing a network printer is quite different from installing a local printer.

How to install a network printer

  • Select START > RUG Menu >  Printers, and select your faculty.
N.B. Installing a network printer only works with Internet Explorer.
  • Select the right printer from the list. All network printers are named in the same way:  Faculty-building number, room number, type of printer.
Printing via IP
If a network printer is not in the iPrint list you can use IP to print to it directly. Make sure you know the IP number of the printer. You will also be asked for a driver.

  • Start the 'Add printer' wizard via Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  • Choose a local printer and deselect 'Automatically detect'.
  • 'Create a new port' and select a standard TCP/IP port.
  • Fill in the IP address of the printer.
  • You will then be asked to select the printer type for the right driver. Most older printers are in the Windows XP list, but for some you will need to download the drivers yourself.
  • Make sure that the paper format is set to A4 and not Letter!

How to install a local printer

  • Select Printers and Faxes via START > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  • Select Add a printer in the menu on the left and follow the wizard. During the process you will be asked for the driver of that specific printer. Most older printers are known to Windows, but it might be a good idea to download the driver of that printer in advance. The Driver guide  or the website of the manufacturer are good starting points.

  • Please check the settings of the printer after installing it. The default setting for paper is usually Letter. To avoid problems with the printer, change the format to A4.
