The Bachlor program

Computing Science started September 1, 2002 with the bachelor program Computing Science. In this bachelor you learn enough about the discipline to make sound decisions about completing your education with a following master program.  You should take learning here in a broad sense: it consists not only of gathering knowledge. We find it equally important that you learn skills to apply this knowledge in concrete situations, and that you are aware of the position of Computing Science in society, that you can communicate adequately over your work, and that you can function as a team member.

The first half year. The first semester lets you orient yourself. You do the courses Orientation Artificial Intelligence and Orientation Computing Science. Although we hope that you will have become enthousiastic about Computer Science by then, you can switch over to the Artificial Intelligence program without much loss of time.

You can find an overview of the courses that make up the bachelor program in the course-catalogue of the university.  Each course therein is expressed in European Credits (EC): 1 EC is equal to 28 hours of work. Click on the link course-catalogue and choose "BSc Informatica".

The Master program

The Master program Computing Science was started in september 2002 in Groningen.  We offer several variants of this master program: a P-variant is meant for those who aim to continue with a Ph.D. program; an M-variant is meant for the students who want to enter the IT business world after they earned their master title. Finally, the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences also has an Education/Communication Master program for Computing Science bachelors (see this link).

An important goal in the master program is to give the student some research experience.  In this way the institute can judge which student is suited to go on in research (Ph.D. program).

The programs contain some required courses and several optional courses. Also the student is able to choose freely  from all courses offered by this university. In this way the student acquires an academic attitude. For instance, the faculty demands at least 5 EC (1 European Credit = 28 hours work) in the field of general philosophy/ethics/history of science in every masterprogram.

A complete list of available courses can be found in a booklet (dutch only), called 'Keuzegids Algemeen Vormende Vakken' (AVV), 2007-2008.

The Master program is divided into three variants: Intelligent Systems, Computational Science and Visualisation en Software Engineering and Distributed Systems. All courses are measured in European Credits (EC): 1 EC equals 28 hours of work. For a description of the contents of the courses we refer to the course-catalog Ocasys of the RUG.  Choose 'opleiding' "MSc Informatica".
