Portal structure

The website of the University of Groningen is made up of PORTALS.

What is a portal?

A PORTAL is a gateway to information. Each portal has its own homepage, main menu and design.

The MAIN MENU can be found in the horizontal bar at the top of the screen. The main menu of the portal is visible on every page.

What are portals for?

A PORTAL can

  • store all the information for a particular part of the university such as a faculty (e.g. the Faculty of Law), a service (e.g. the University Office), a research institute (e.g. Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials), or the University Council, etc.
  • serve as a point of entry for a particular target group (e.g. potential students, students, government authorities, companies, staff)
  • be used for a particular activity/event (e.g. RUG Lustrum)

Portal design

The design elements mean that portals can vary in appearance. The following elements may vary:

  • Photo on the homepage of the portal

  • The photo at the top of each page of the portal

  • The name of the portal on the top left-hand side. This is clickable and takes the visitor back to the portal homepage.

  • The menu (although the structure will be kept as consistent as possible)

The navigation elements are the same for each portal. This also applies to the positioning of page elements, font, font size, etc.

These elements create a distinctive university house style. At the top left-hand corner of every page, you will find a clickable RUG LOGO, which takes you back to the RUG HOMEPAGE.

Portal Co-ordinators

Each PORTAL has a PORTAL CO-ORDINATOR whom you can contact if you have a question about a portal.

If you have question about the RUG website, you can contact the WEB CO-ORDINATOR.
