Dean's message

Excelling at the Frontiers of Knowledge

In keeping with the University of Groningen offering an education that meets your talents and ambitions, the Honours College of the University can provide a comprehensive, university-wide Honours Programme in which you can further develop your talents. We hope to see you ‘excel at the frontiers of knowledge’. This is completely in keeping with the University’s motto: ‘Working at the frontiers of knowledge’. We hope thus to prepare you for a leading role in academia and society – in today’s high-quality knowledge economy.

Deepening + broadening + personal development

The Honours programme is characterized by a combination of deepening knowledge related to your own degree programme and broadening your knowledge by introducing you to other fields and allowing for personal development. This leads to a broad academic outlook.

We have opted for a combination of deepening and broadening because an understanding of another academic field provides you with the opportunity to put your knowledge of your own field into a broader perspective; it can improve your awareness of different approaches and of how relevant your field is to society. You will thus create new insights and see new opportunities. Such cross-pollination is often the starting point for innovation in your field as it frequently arises at the borders between disciplines. In the Honours Programme, science is often related to various current themes and problems in society, in both the deepening and the broadening parts.

We pay attention to your personal development, as knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses and how these develop forms the basis for social and communicative skills such as empathizing with others, collaborating with them and stimulating them. Such skills in particular are important to future leadership.

Not a campus, but a community within the University

We choose not to isolate talented people like you on a campus somewhere, but to provide you with a meeting place within the University community in a non-residential Honours College. You will follow the Honours Programme in conjunction with your own Bachelor’s degree programme. This will keep you in contact with regular student life and society. The teaching is intensive, interactive and in small groups, given in both Dutch and English.

The Honours College is located on the top floor of the Academy Building on Broerstraat, in the city centre. This is the central spot where talented students and their lecturers can meet one another. However, that’s not the only place where you can meet talented and motivated students – this also happens in the broadening interdisciplinary modules and activities in which students and lecturers from different degree programmes will participate. This will lead to a close-knit Honours Community of students and their lecturers.
