The life table, which describes the survival pattern of a population, is the core method in demography and an important device in many research areas. Several generalizations of the life table technique exist. One generalization is the multiple decrement life table in which more than one exit from 'life' is possible, e.g. mortality by cause of death. Another generalization is the increment-decrement life tables to study processes in which reverse flows are possible, e.g. moving in and out of the region. In the course, special emphasis is on the application of the life-table to population health issues (i.e. cause-specific mortality, disability versus mortality) and to multi-regional dynamics (i.e. moving between two regions).
