Healthy Ageing

Population ageing is a very contemporary topic for discussion, and presents both challenges and opportunities at the individual and societal level, especially as it relates to health. Older adults within their socio-cultural context can have specific concerns and needs, give different meaning to being healthy and to ageing. Understanding the complexities associated with ageing requires transdisciplinary cooperation, such as the new program of "Healthy Ageing: Population and Society" research, being developed jointly by the Departments of Demography, Sociology and Epidemiology at the University of Groningen.

The module " Healthy Ageing" goes more in-depth into the process of ageing and how it relates to health and well-being, using an interdisciplinary and societal perspective. Topics include theoretical perspectives, demographic and epidemiologic transitions, the effect of ageing on the individual, and the influence of the individual within their society, intergenerational issues, constructs of ageing, giving meaning, and diversity in ageing, the life course, self determination and self agency, and place attachment.
