Programme

Research Master Philosophy (120 EC)

The purpose of our Research Master degree programme is to introduce students into the craft of philosophical research. The research master programme is specifically aimed at the acquisition of the knowledge and skills needed to enrol in a PhD programme. Only a small group of enthusiastic (national and foreign) students with an exceptional talent for philosophy is selected and admitted to the programme.

The Research Master degree programme has a duration of 2 years (120 EC). You can specialize in Ethics, History of Philosophy, Practical Philosophy and Theoretical Philosophy.

The curriculum includes four Basic Courses aimed at familiarizing you with important questions in your area of specialization. The core curriculum that is unique to the Research Master degree programme consists of Philosophical Methods and Texts Courses. The aim of these courses is to familiarize students with pivotal texts in different areas of philosophy and to develop skills in different styles and methods of doing philosophy. Other courses include Tutorials, centred around the current research of a lecturer of your choosing; Electives, which may be chosen among the Basic Courses and Tutorials offered by our Faculty or by other departments in or outside Groningen; and a supervised Reading Programme. Moreover, you participate in one of Research Seminars of the four departments of our Faculty. Dutch students are also required to do part of their coursework at a university outside of the Netherlands. Your curriculum is concluded by a Thesis in your area of specialization and a Research Proposal, which can be used to apply for a PhD position.

Grants

Foreign students who come to Groningen can apply for various kinds of grants depending on the country of origin. For the period they spend abroad Dutch students can apply for a grant to the Stichting Groninger Universiteitsfonds. Use the Grantfinder to find other scholarships. Our faculty has student exchange agreements with philosophy departments of universities around Europe.
