Measuring Concepts in Quantitative Research (Research Master)

This course deals with the process of operationalizing, i.e. the translation of theoretical concepts into measurement instruments. The role that validity and reliability play in this process will be dealt with in depth. Attention will be focused on the construction and use of multi-item measurement scales. Also determining relevant effects and the relation with sample size (power) will be discussed. Statistical tools such as factor analysis, and reliability assessment will dealt with. Students will have to do several exercises: developing a questionnaire, creating scale-scores from an existing dataset, judging and investigating the structure of an existing questionnaire. Students will learn how to develop good measurement instruments, and how to judge existing instruments.
