Junior Scientific Masterclass
The ‘Honours’ programme of the Junior Scientific Masterclass (JSM) offered by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) presents interested and motivated students of Medicine and Dentistry with a challenging programme that makes the most of their scientific talents. The JSM programme has two phases: the Bachelor ‘Honours’ and the MD/PhD programme.

JSM Bachelor ‘Honours’ program
The JSM Bachelor ‘Honours’ programme is a challenging scientific training programme that builds on and runs parallel to the regular BSc degree programme. It aims to involve motivated students in the clinical research of the UMCG virtually from the start of their studies. The programme trains students at an early stage in the basic scientific skills they will need to embark on a career as a physician-scientist. Completion of this special ‘Honours’ programme (30 ECTS) entitles graduates to the ‘Honours degree in Science’ distinction.

JSM MD/PhD program
The JSM MD/PhD programme is a challenging and prestigious programme combining the final two years of the MSc programme with a PhD track. This PhD track enables MSc students to obtain their PhD in less time than normal (just two additional years). Completion of an MD/PhD track is one of the keys to a successful career as a physician-scientist.

The University of Groningen Honours College gives talented and motivated students the chance to follow a challenging programme (45 ECTS) in addition to their regular Bachelor’s programme. This extracurricular ‘Honours’ programme consists of two parts: a ‘broadening’ and a ‘deepening’ part. The broadening part is organized at University level by the Honours College, the deepening component by each faculty.

Students at the UMCG (with the exception of students of Human Movement Sciences) must follow courses and activities (at least 25 ECTS) from the JSM Bachelor ‘Honours’ programme to fulfil the obligations of the deepening part. Completion of this special ‘Honours’ programme entitles graduates to an ‘Honours’ distinction.
