About the organisation

Organisation of the department of Sociology

The department of Sociology is part of the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences.

The Sociology program is led by the Director of Education. The Director of Education arranges the implementation of the education by teachers. The Program Committee advises the Director of Education. The Director of Education, study advisor and student administration together form the Education Office.

The Exam Committee is responsible for the level of the graduates. The Exam Committee is led by a professor or associate professor.

The research is concentrated in the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).
The research is led by the Director of Research. The Director of Research is responsible for the research program, including the PhD training.

Policy issues and administrative coordination are discussed in the Directors' Consultation (DO). This consultation is formed by the head of department, education and research director and the policy officer. The financial advisor and the personnel advisor from the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences are also present at these consultations.

Monthly current matters from the DO are discussed with the permanent staff members and postdocs of the department of Sociology. In addition, there is an annual policy day on education for all staff members. The ICS has various forms of consultation both within the University of Groningen and with the Sociology departments in Utrecht, Nijmegen and Amsterdam.

Directors and staff members are supported in their duties by a secretariat, a financial administrative employee and a policy officer.
