Sociology

Sociology is the study of social problems and societal issues. What is the quality of society? And why do social changes occur?

The Department of Sociology in Groningen provides a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree. The one-year Master's program focuses on policy issues. Students choose a specialization: Crime and Security, Health, Care and Welfare, Work and the Life-Course or Politics, Society & Policy. There is one English track: Social Networks in a Sustainable Society. In addition, there is a two-year educational master, which prepares for a career as a secondary school teacher in social studies. The Department also participates in the two-year faculty research master, which trains students to become an academic researcher.

In the research program the realization of social welfare is central. The program emphasis on explanatory sociological theory formation and advanced research techniques . The program is elaborated in five research themes: Standards and networks, Managing sustainable cooperation, The social development of young people, Healthy and happy aging and Statistical methods for the analysis of social networks. The research program Sociology of the University of Groningen was assessed in the most recent research review as being of very good to excellent quality.
