ABSTRACT
Interpersonal conflict is common in the workplace because of individual variations in needs and values. However, the current literature on conflict management seldom takes age of the employees into consideration when examining selection of conflict strategies. With reference to past studies on aging, compared with younger adults, senior adults often use more passive strategies (such as yielding and avoidance) and fewer destructive strategies (such as dominance) to deal with their interpersonal tensions. It is therefore questioned whether middle-aged and younger employees react to workplace conflicts similarly or differently. In this talk, the findings of a cross-sectional study and a daily diary study conducted in Hong Kong Chinese working adults will be presented. The effects of conflict strategies on work-related outcomes will also be compared between the two age groups.
