General Information
In the field of teaching and research, the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences aims to invest in top-quality expertise, respect differences in talent and ambition, and lead the field in Europe.
In order to improve the level of quality, the Faculty is aiming to attract and keep excellent academics who will be expected to develop personally and attain key positions in research and teaching.
To this end, the Faculty Board introduced a tenure track system in 2007.
The following starting points and aims lie at the heart of the tenure track system:
> To offer career perspectives to new and existing personnel
New personnel
The Faculty has developed a pre-programmed promotion process in order to offer young talented academic career perspectives.
The staff member can start at the level of University Lecturer and over a period of twelve years advance to become Professor.
Promotion criteria have been devised for the various phases of the tenure track system which must be satisfied before promotion occurs.
Existing personnel
Those who wish to volunteer to join the Faculty tenure-track system may apply for an evaluation.
A condition for joining the system is a permanent appointment of at least 32 hours/0.8 FTE.
The same procedures are followed and the same criteria for promotion apply as for new personnel.
See above.
> Actual performance will be made transparent and linked to measures for career guidance.
> The management of the teaching and research will be professionalized.
The introduction of the system has produced good results –
the 2007 assessment round of permanent staff resulted in nine promotions.
In spring 2008, the introduction of the tenure track system was evaluated by the assessors.
The evaluation of the first TTS round resulted in more detailed notes and some changes that are summarized in the ‘Notes to the GMW Tenure Track System’ document.
Where the Notes document differs from the ‘GMW Tenure Track Memorandum’, approved by the Board of the University on 1 May 2007, the ‘Notes to the GMW Tenure Track System’ will prevail.
'Notes to the GMW Tenure Track System' will be publicized soon. For a copy you can contact Ms. Francien Broekhans, f.h.broekhans@rug.nl.
