ABSTRACT The assumption that human cognition is best studied within a complex systems framework has several implications. Human cognition may not be accurately captured using static measures and different (i.e., nonlinear) methods are required to reveal the patterns of variation of complex behavior. Furthermore, nonlinear dynamical modeling of such behavior leads to different types of understanding with a focus on change and development. I will present empirical work from a variety of applications of nonlinear methods. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a complexity approach to human behavior and provide ways into an alternative understanding of topics ranging from reading comprehension and dyslexia to decision making under uncertainty.
