PhD Positions in Philosophy and TheologyIn coorporation with Radboud University Nijmegen Vacancy Number: 21.01.12
Job descriptionApplications are invited for two Ph.D. positions. These positions are part of the project "Overcoming the Faith-Reason Opposition: Pauline Pistis in Contemporary Philosophy" funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). This project examines the impact and the meaning of the present-day, mostly secular philosophical readings of the Letters of Saint Paul for the conception of faith and reason. It is divided into three subprojects of which the first two are the following: (1) The first subproject examines why present-day continental philosophers such as Alain Badiou and Giorgio Agamben turn to Paul and what they find in his letters. (2) The second subproject places Paul among his philosophic contemporaries and examines Paul's use of pistis and pisteuein by comparing it use with the way in which ancient philosophers such as Plutarch and Epictetus use them. For a full description of the project, cf. http://www.ru.nl/publish/pages/650147/pauluswebsite.pdf [PDF] The first project will be supervised by prof. dr. Ben Vedder en dr. Gert-Jan van der Heiden at the Radboud University Nijmegen. The second project will be supervised by prof. dr. George van Kooten at the University of Groningen. QualificationsSuitable candidates pursue an interest in continental philosophy and philosophy of religion (Project 1) or in New Testament and Ancient Philosophy (Project 2). They are fluent in English and have, or will soon have completed an M.A. (Project 1 and 2) in a field relevant to the project.
