Master Programme Religion and the Public Domain

  • 'We live in a Christian world.'
  • 'You can’t understand our culture and the way we live today without being conscious of our Christian heritage.'
  • 'Religion is omnipresent in the public domain.'
  • 'It is impossible to keep religion out of politics.'
... If you feel challenged by these statements, this master programme is the ideal choice for you.

Religion, in particular Christianity, is present everywhere in our cultural, Western world. At first sight, this might seem exaggerated – don’t we live in a secular age, with religion largely privatized? However, religion is not only manifest in traditional churches or in Christian rituals; crucial ideas such as human rights, liberty and democracy were stimulated and shaped by Christianity. Even the very concept of the secular stems from Christian theology. The analysis that we live in a secular world is too unsophisticated to do justice to the relevance of our Christian heritage.

Through a unique combination of cultural-historical and philosophical-conceptual approaches, this masters programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to analyse the pivotal role of religion in the Western world. You will become a highly employable specialist whose cultural competence is a valuable asset to a wide range of educational, scientific and political organisations.
