About the Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies in Groningen.

The building where the faculty has its home is known among locals as the Old Court of Justice and it is the most beautiful faculty building in the Netherlands. Before the faculty moved in, it was the Groningen court of justice, with stately lawyers’ rooms, a monumental rococo court room and detainee cells. The renaissance front however, is much older than the interior rococo alterations. This front was built for the burgomaster of those days, Abel Coenders van Helpen, when converting the original beguinage – a kind of lay monastery – into a stately town villa.

So this is an appropriate place for a faculty where religion is studied.
