Prof. Francesco Giglio

Visiting professor private law

Prof. Francesco Giglio
Prof. Francesco Giglio
Francesco Giglio, Dott. giurisprudenza (Rome), LLM (Freiburg i.Br.), Dr iur (Osnabrück), MSt, DPhil (Oxon), is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the School of Law of The University of Manchester. Previously, he was Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter at the University of Osnabrück (1995-1998); Visiting Researcher, Oxford University (1998-1999); Assistant Lecturer in Comparative Law, Cambridge University (1999-2000); and Lecturer in Law, The University of Manchester (2000-2006).

His teaching and research interests lie in legal theory as applied to civil and common law, comparative law, European private law, law of obligations (especially torts, unjust enrichment and damages), Roman law, private international law. In his research, he seeks to understand the foundations and the operative mechanisms of legal institutions, particularly of those which constitute the pillars of a legal system. Legal taxonomy, together with historical and philosophical investigations, characterises his legal analysis.

Francesco Giglio has published articles and monographs in English, German and Italian on the law of obligations and Roman law. In particular, he has a keen interest in the law of unjust enrichment and the law of restitution. His last monograph on ‘The Foundations of Restitution for Wrongs’ has been published by Hart in 2007. He is now working on a major project on the concept of ownership in European private law.

In the course of his research, Francesco Giglio has obtained strong support from major funding institutions, such as the DAAD, the Deutsche Forschung Gemeinschaft, and the Alexander for Humboldt Foundation in Germany; the European Commission; and the British Leverhulme Trust.

During his appointment as visiting professor in the Centre for Law and Governance at the University of Groningen, Francesco Giglio plans to expand on his interest in multi-disciplinary perspectives. Beyond teaching in the area of the law of obligations, he would like to organise a network of research on the ‘private law as an open system’, which should attract experts of civil law, but also Romanists, legal historians, and philosophers, with the aim of questioning the concept of law as a self-contained system.

When not working, Francesco Giglio dedicates part of his spare-time to rowing. Unfortunately, he has so far been unable to make a living out of his passion.

More information on professor Giglio can be found on the website of University of Manchester.
