About the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance

Balancing public and private interests

The Groningen Centre for Law and Governance works in cooperation with the VU University Amsterdam Centre for Law and Governance (VU CLG). Together these centres form the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance. This is an open platform for legal research addressing the relationship between public and private interests.

The participating research centres each have their own research programme focusing on the interaction between public and private law and the function of law in the regulatory state. This theme not only calls for “internal” legal research but also for reflections on the function of law with respect to other steering tools. Although the research profile is primarily legal, multidisciplinary research will also be conducted within the framework of the NILG.

Cooperation is one of the NILG’s primary tools. The NILG intends to combine as many research initiatives as necessary for it to gain international recognition as well as national recognition. With a view to this, although the participating research centres each have their own research programme, wherever possible research within the Institute will be combined.

NILG film
In preparation of the launch of the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance (NILG) the institute commissioned several studies investigating topics present on the institutes research agenda. The results of these studies have been summarized in a short film that was shown as an introduction to the launch event. As the official language of this event was Dutch, the film is also in Dutch.

The NILG has been launched officially during the founding conference on 16 November 2009.
