Frequently asked questions

What is the distinguishing feature of a 'top' programme?

The term 'top' does not imply that the programme is a master programme on top of (or in addition to) another one. It is a selective programme for ambitious students planning to pursue a Ph.D. and eventually a professional academic career.

Can I start with the top programme without officially having obtained my bachelor's degree?

No, you must have finished all courses (for Groningen students: including AVV) before you start the top master or top programme.

Is there an application fee?

There is no application fee.

What is the duration of the program including Phd?

The duration of the top programme is 2 years (i.e., 24 months, starting in September). A subsequent Ph.D. research encompasses 4 years.

Is an English proficiency test always required?

Not if English is your native or nearly native language. Students with a background in English that is comparable to Dutch students do not need to take a proficiency test either. Hence, Dutch students are exempt from proving proficiency in English.

We also accept:

  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (A, B or C);
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (A, B or C);
  • an overall score of 6.5 or higher in the International English Language Testing System (Academic version);

Chinese candidates need a NESO certificate to obtain a visa. For the NESO certificate you have to take the IELTS test. For more information go to www.rug.nl/prospectivestudents.
