Admission criteria

Admission to the top programmes is highly selective. The requirements include:

  • a Bachelor's degree in the field of the top programme;
  • a Bachelor's degree in another appropriate field, in the opinion of the Admissions Board;
  • appropriate attitude, motivation to pursue a scientific career, ambition, and talent;
  • excellent documented proficiency in English (the test cannot be older than two years, except for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English);
    • IELTS (Academic) 6.5 – no less than 6.0 on each section
    • TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) 92 – no less than 21 on each section
    • TOEFL CBT (computer-based test) 237 – no less than 21 on each section
    • TOEFL PBT (paper-based test) 580 - no less than 55 on each section
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English - CAE (Certificate of Advanced English)
    • English language test – University of Groningen Language Center –  section scores C2 or C1 and one section score B2.

      It could be that you are admitted to the master programme you applied for, even though the English language test score you submitted with your application is insufficient. One of the conditions for final admission will then be that you improve your English language proficiency and take a new test.

      You may apply without having taken an English language test. If this is the case, we would appreciate it if you could inform us of the date on which you are planning to take such a test.
  • recommendations by qualified referees.

The different websites of the programmes give a more specified description of the admission requirements.
