Overview of the programme

The one-year master degree curriculum starts in September. The language of instruction for this program is English. However, Dutch speaking students are free to submit individual study materials (assignments, exams, thesis work) in Dutch. As an option, students may link their EIP program international so-called double degree programs, specifically at the Institute of Technology Bandung (Indonesia), and Oldenburg (Germany). These linkages are set up as two year so-called double-degrees, providing students with the option to expand their curriculum into the field of development planning and coastal management respectively.

The interdisciplinary character of EIP is reflected in the contents of the curriculum. A broad introduction of relevant international insights provides a basis on which the knowledge and skills offered in the separate courses are positioned. The field of EIP is introduced in its national and international setting in the the opening course entitled 'Dilemmas in Infrastructure Planning', and during the 'EIP Interactive Workshop' and 'Planning Theory' course. These educational activities together provide the student with a comprehensive overview of EIP in its academic and professional context. Furthermore, they constitute a theoretical orientation on the field of EIP and its potential areas of research and application.

Building on this basis, attention will turn to EIP's specific tools such as Planning Methods and Evaluation. Most planning skills are embedded in this specific course, and also courses such as 'Transitions in Environmental Planning' (e.g., making strategies) and 'Comparative Planning Design' (e.g., case studies). At this time, the first steps are made into understanding frontline research in the field, and establishing a relevant angle for the Master thesis project. To satisfy the individual academic interests of students, a number of electives is available. The last course to be offered in the curriculum before embarking on the writing of the master thesis is 'Water and Coastal Zone Management'. This course discusses how spatial planning can contribute to the management of water, and vice versa.

The pinnacle of the one-year Master program is the thesis. This is an individual testimony of mastering an individually selected subject relevant to EIP. The thesis presents a scientific analysis from the definition of a problem, via an analysis of planning practice, ending in academically sound conclusions and recommendations. The Master thesis is an individual effort supervised by one of the staff members. The topics for a Master thesis will be linked to students' interests, ongoing research by members of staff, and to lines of investigation at international partners.
