Two PhD positions in Chemical Biology: artificial allosteric enzymes

Within the context of an ERC funded project on the modular assembly of DNA based (catalytic) systems, two fully-funded 4-year PhD positions are available immediately in the Biomolecular Chemistry group headed by Prof. Gerard Roelfes.

Both positions involve the chemical modification of biomolecules, such as DNA and proteins, with the goal of creating new bio-inpired molecular systems that are responsive to chemical changes in their environment.

The ideal candidate has a Masters or equivalent degree in (bio-)chemistry with a with background in either synthetic/bio- organic chemistry or biochemistry. Moreover, the candidate should have a strong interest in performing interdisciplinary research at the interface between organic and bio-chemistry. Good proficiency of the English language is required.

The posts are available immediately and should be filled by September 2012.

The monthly gross salary is 2042 euro per month in the first year, increasing to 2612 euro in the final year.

PhD position in Bio-Organic Chemistry: responsive pore forming peptides

A fully funded 4-year PhD position is available immediately in the Biomolecular Chemistry group headed by Prof. Gerard Roelfes.

The research aims to develop synthetic hybrid compounds of antimicrobial peptides and oligonucleotides that have the ability to create pores in membranes, with potential applications in drug delivery.

The ideal candidate has a Masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a background in synthetic organic and/or bio-organic chemistry. Good proficiency of the English language is required.

The posts are available immediately and should be filled no later than September 2012.

The monthly gross salary is 2042 euro per month in the first year, increasing to 2612 euro in the final year.

PhD position in Bio-Inorganic Chemistry: novel molecular tools for the study of reactive oxygen species in living cells

A fully funded 4-year PhD position is available immediately in the Biomolecular Chemistry group headed by Prof. Gerard Roelfes in a collaborative project with the University Medical Center Groningen.

The aim of the research project is the creation of novel molecular probes, based on redox active transition metals, which will be used for the study and manipulation of reactive oxygen species in living cells.

The ideal candidate has a Masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a background in (bio-) inorganic chemistry or (bio-)organic chemistry and an interest in working at the interface between molecular inorganic chemistry and cell biology. Good proficiency of the English language is required.

Two PhD positions in Supramolecular Systems Chemistry

Two fully-funded 4-year PhD positions are available immediately in the Systems Chemistry group headed by Prof. Otto (www.otto-lab.com).Both positions involve the use of dynamic combinatorial libraries for the development of new synthetic receptors, synthetic proteins, self-synthesising and self-assembling materials, following on from work published earlier (Science 2010, 327, 1502).

The ideal candidate has a Masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a strong interest in (physical) organic chemistry, peptides and/or supramolecular/materials chemistry. Good proficiency of the English language is required. Affinity with computational work or programming will be beneficial.

The posts are available immediately and should be filled no later than 1 September 2012.

Two PhD positions on Self-Replicating Chemical Systems

Two fully-funded 4-year PhD positions are available from 1 January 2012 in the Systems Chemistry group headed by Prof. Otto (www.otto-lab.com) in the context of the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network on Replication and Adaptation in Molecular Networks (READ).This network involves nine European research groups and two companies and is focussed on systems chemistry and the origin of life. Both positions involve the use of dynamic molecular networks for the development of new self-replicating molecules and self-assembling materials, following on from work published earlier (Science 2010, 327, 1502).

While the PhD positions are based at the University of Groningen, there is ample opportunity for extensive interactions and visits to other labs and companies across Europe.

The ideal candidate has a Masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a strong interest in (physical) organic chemistry, peptides and/or supramolecular/materials chemistry. Good proficiency of the English language is required. Affinity with computational work or programming will be beneficial.

Postdoctoral position in Dynamic Combinatorial Chemistry of Peptides

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the Systems Chemistry group headed by Prof. Otto (www.otto-lab.com).The position involves the use of dynamic combinatorial libraries of peptides to construct synthetic proteins.

The ideal candidate has a PhD degree in peptide or protein chemistry, physical organic chemistry, or supramolecular/materials chemistry. Good proficiency of the English language is required.

The post is available immediately and should be filled no later than 1 September 2012.

The gross salary is in the order of 2744 to 3315 euro per month, depending on experience.

Three PhD positions on Oxidation catalysis and Spectroscopy

Three fully-funded 4-year PhD positions are available in the Molecular Systems and Interfaces group headed by Dr Wesley R Browne ( see website ) in the context of the an ERC funded project (SOLCAT). This project will involve a multidisciplinary team from synthetic organic chemistry to catalysis through to spectroscopy/reaction kinetics and micro/mesofluidic technology. 

While the PhD positions are based at the University of Groningen, there is ample opportunity for extensive interactions and visits to other labs across Europe. The ideal candidates hold a Masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a strong interest in  organic chemistry, molecular inorganic chemistry, molecular spectroscopy or catalysis. Good proficiency of the English language is required. Affinity with computational work or programming (e.g. Mathlab/labview) would be beneficial.

The posts are available from 1 January 2012 and should be filled no later than 31 December 2012.

Two PhD positions in Molecular Inorganic Chemistry

Two fully-funded 4 year PhD positions are available immediately in the group of Dr. Edwin Otten (Molecular Inorganic Chemistry) in the field of synthetic inorganic chemistry and catalysis. Applicants are expected to be enthusiastic about working on a multi-faceted, challenging research project that requires excellent synthetic skills. The project will focus on early transition metal complexes with ligands that are designed to enable (catalytic) organic transformations based on redox-chemistry. Specifically, we target compounds that activate O2 for use in oxidation of organic substrates.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a strong background in inorganic/organometallic chemistry and catalysis. Experience in organic chemistry (ligand synthesis) and an interest in computational chemistry (relating electronic structure to reactivity) is an advantage. Good proficiency of the English language is required.
