RSEE was established in February 2009 as a local research school within the research institute, Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) at the University of Groningen and is adminstered under the Groningen Graduate School of Science (GGSS).
The mission of RSEE is to organize and coordinate all aspects of PhD-level education in the fields of ecology and evolution.
- Within CEES, RSEE provides a framework for planning, course work, supervision, professional development and mentoring of its >125 PhD students—from the starting phase of their project to the completion of their thesis. See Educational Programme.
- At the national level, RSEE assists in the development and coordination of a varied programme of both 'topical' and 'methodological' courses taught by experts in the field. At this level, its main purpose is development and coordination of PhD-level education, building on the former national research school, Functional Ecology (FE), which was also coordinated by the CEES institute. See PhD Courses.
- RSEE actively participates in the Netherlands Ecological Research Network (NERN), the national platform for junior and senior researchers in the fields of ecology and evolution. At the annual "PhD days" conference, students have the opportunity to present their work to a broad audience and network with researchers from all over the country.
As in the past, RSEE will work closely with other national institutes and research schools throughout the country in order to ensure the timely availability of specialized advanced courses, master classes, summer schools and meetings for PhD students.
Affiliated institutes include:
-
IBL (Institute of Biology, University of Leiden)
-
IWWR (Institute for Water and Wetland Research, University of Nijmegen)
-
IEB (Institute of Environmental Biology, University of Utrecht)
-
IBED (Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, University of Amsterdam)
-
NIOO (Royal Netherlands Institute of Ecology)
-
NIOZ (Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research)
Research Schools include:
-
Biodiversity: A collaboration between four universities and three national museums with emphasis on evolutionary and phylogenetic research.
- Production Ecology and Resource Conservation (PE&RC): A research school at Wageningen University with focus on agricultural production systems and sustainable land use.
- Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE): A multi-disciplinary collaboration of environmental institutes from eight universities with focus on the causes and consequences of environmental change.
- Experimental Plant Sciences (EPS): A collaboration of six university institutes with focus on plant research.
