Research

Research in the Microbial Physiology group focuses on the physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis of the function, mechanism and regulation of enzymes in the (network of) metabolic pathways in bacteria (mainly actinomycetes). This information provides a firm basis for subsequent pathway metabolic engineering, using a combination of physiologic and genetic techniques and approaches, often also involving protein engineering steps. The fundamental knowledge generated in these studies is used for the construction of bacterial strains overproducing primary and secondary metabolites, or for biotransformations. Bioexplore and the Centre for Carbohydrate Bioengineering (CCB) are associated with the Microbial Physiology group.
