Haisma (1957) is professor of Pharmaceutic Gene Modulation at the Pharmacy department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He studied medical biology at Utrecht University and has worked in the US (including at Harvard Medical School) and at VU University Amsterdam. In 2000 he was appointed Professor of Therapeutic Gene Modulation at the University of Groningen. Haisma conducts research into the development of drugs that can influence human genes in order to cure diseases. Haisma is editor of a number of journals in the field of gene therapy and has written over 100 publications and various patent applications in his field of study. In addition, he is former chair of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Gentherapie [Netherlands Gene Therapy Association] and member of the board of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Farmaceutische Wetenschappen [Netherlands Pharmaceutical Sciences Association].
