While in Europe 70% of the total professional soccer club revenues are paid out in players’ salaries, in the US basketball world there’s a big discussion going on about much lower figures: about 50% goes to the players there. Sports economist Prof. Ruud Koning of FEB: ‘Another thing that is quite foreign in European terms is for club owners to forbid players to train and play matches until a salary agreement has been reached. What will happen if players decide to break away from their union? Will phenomena like the Bosman ruling, a 1995 European Court of Justice decision concerning freedom of movement for workers and freedom of association for professional soccer players, appear in the US as well?
