Ever since the start of the crisis, some commentators have tried to make more than just an economic story out of it. What we see, according to these voices, is actually Max Weber’s old cultural divide between Protestant and Catholic economies. Hard-working, frugal Calvinist northerners are being forced to pay for the careless, spend-thrift ways of Catholic southerners. Is the euro-crisis really a clash of civilizations?
