Sven Schmit best FEB student of the year

On 1 July 2011, during the official close of the academic year, the University of Groningen awarded the GUF-100 prizes to nine outstanding students, one from each faculty. Sven Schmit (21), student of Econometrics and Operations Research, was proclaimed the best student of the Faculty of Economics and Business and awarded a grant.

Schmit was nominated by Prof. Maarten van der Vlerk, who described him as an ‘exceptionally good student’. Van der Vlerk: ‘Sven is not afraid to voice his opinion and is very articulate. He is a talented student, and is not afraid to take on extra challenges either.’

Schmit held several student-assistantships in first-year Econometrics course units and followed a Summer School course at Berkeley (California) in 2010. Alongside his studies, Schmit sat on the Lustrum Committee of the Vesting study association and this year he was a member of the EOR degree programme advisory committee.

Off to Cambridge

Schmit started his degree programme in 2008 and recently gained his Bachelor’s degree with an average mark of 9. He added extra weight to his study programme by following additional course units at the Mathematics department – a deliberate choice that would enable him to qualify for a follow-on Master’s degree programme in Mathematics at a top university abroad.

This has resulted in his admission to the Master’s degree programme in Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge. ‘I would like to thank Dr Nusse, Dr Nieuwenhuis and Prof. Van der Vlerk for their help. Without them I would never have qualified for this degree programme at Cambridge’, said Schmit, who previously won a Huygens Scholarship.
