Conference: Young economists from around the world to gather in Groningen

Date:April 12, 2011

Organized by and for young economists, the 16th Spring Meeting of Young Economists (SMYE) will take place from 14-16 April at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen. One hundred and fifty participants from around the world will meet and present their research in an international setting.

The young economists (PhD students, postdocs and assistant professors) will present subjects ranging from the economic aspects of crime to the financial crisis, and from development economics to environmental economics.

One of the conference organizers Richard Jong-A-Pin: ‘Most academic conferences draw an older crowd and this is why one day the idea came up to give younger academics the chance to build their own networks at an annual conference. This is now the sixteenth. We’re proud to be hosting the conference in Groningen this year, as it puts our Faculty on the map for the leading economists of the future.’

Keynote speakers will include prominent academics such as econometrist Joshua Angrist of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Annamaria Lusardi from Dartmouth College, a global expert on financial illiteracy – the fact that few people truly understand financial products such as their mortgages or pensions. The final speaker will be Frank Smets, head of academic research at the European Central Bank, who will discuss the monetary policy during the financial crisis.

Mayor of Groningen Peter Rehwinkel will open the SMYE conference on 14 April. It will take place at the Faculty of Economics and Business in the Duisenberg Building and the Kapteynborg at Zernike.
